The field of ABA includes a range of procedures and techniques that have been shown to be effective in changing behavior. One application of ABA is an intervention approach for children with autism spectrum disorders consisting of a data-driven system of teaching that involves breaking down skills into their component parts and using prompting and reinforcement to increase desirable behaviors and decrease challenging behaviors. ABA involves the application of the principles of behavior with the goal of increasing socially significant behaviors such as communication, social skills, academics, and adaptive living skills e.g., self-care, toileting, and gross/fine motor skills.
While ABA isn't the only treatment that is available to children with autism, scientific studies have shown it to be the most effective. Many of the other popular treatment methods lack the scientific research needed to evaluate their effectiveness. The Surgeon General, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Research Council, support ABA as a treatment approach for children on the autism spectrum. Some of the documented results of early intensive behavioral treatment, such as ABA, are increases in language acquisition, IQ, and adaptive behavior such as communication, socialization and daily living skills (McEachin, Smith and Lovaas, 1993).
Sessions are held in locations most convenient for you and your child. Some children have sessions in their home, while others are seen at their school or daycare. We can also work with children in community settings outside the home and school if desired.
Social skills facilitate verbal and nonverbal communication and interaction between people. Because children with autism spectrum disorders do not readily learn social skills from their surrounding environment like typically developing children, skills are best taught systematically in structured, small group settings.
Yes - consistency is key! We encourage collaboration among service providers in order to facilitate consistency.
CNC can assist families in developing a full-time ABA program by helping hire, train, and oversee line therapists who will provide the desired amount of ABA therapy for your child. Monthly team meetings are held to share information and ensure consistency.
Many insurance companies provide coverage for behavioral therapy for individuals with autism spectrum disorders. Please contact your insurance provider to determine your policy coverage. We will be happy to assist you in any way we can.
